[Pharmacology and Toxicology] The principal pharmacological studies revealed that the pulmonary index could be decreased in mice infected by the influenza virus (FM1) and the mortality within 48h in mice infected by staphylococcus aureus. The inflammatory responses including fever, edema and capillary permeability were also inhibited in the related animal models. It showed an antipyretic effect on rabbit fever caused by the triplex vaccine; inhibited xylene-induced swelling of mice ear and carrageenan-induced swelling of rat foot, and reduced acetic acid-induced abdominal capillary permeability in mice. It exhibited the capacity of increasing tracheal phenol red output in mice, extending the incubation of period and decreasing cough frequency in ammonia liquor-induced coughing tests in mice, as well as decreasing cough frequency in citric acid-induced coughing tests in guinea pigs. It could enhance the delayed-type hypersensitivity response in hydrocortisone-induced immunosuppressed mice, consistent with the enhancement in the phagocytosis of peritoneal macrophage and the serum hemolysin antibody in cyclophosphamide-induced immunosuppressed mice. The in vitro studies demonstrated that the product exerted broad antiviral activities against influenza viruses, parainfluenza virus Ⅰ, respiratory syncytial virus, adenovirus type 3 and 7, herpes simplex virus Ⅰ and Ⅱ, SARS. In addition, the product also exhibited bacteriostatic actions against Staphylococcus aureus, α-hemolytic streptococcus, β-hemolytic streptococcus, pneumococcus, and Hemophilus influenza.
