Julius Odinga went from grace to grass after banks declined to exchange his old notes amounting to KSh 500,000 on account that the deadline had elapsed. The former mechanic made two trips to the Central Bank of Kenya in Kisumu hoping to get assistance but his efforts hit a snag. The government launched a new generational currency in June 2019 and gave Kenyan until the end of September 2019 to swap the old currency with the new ones.

The change of currency, according to Central Bank of Kenya boss Patrick Njoroge, was aimed at reducing the circulation of fake notes and taming corruption. Njoroge noted the new currencies had special features that cannot be easily be forged by fraudsters.
